This is the Isle of Dogs in east London. At the top of the map is the Canary Wharf estate; at the bottom are the largely residential areas of Millwall and Cubitt Town.
The “island” is surrounded on three sides by the River Thames, but that’s not normally a problem because the area has pretty good transport links: the Jubilee line of the tube at Canary Wharf; and half a dozen stations on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR).
The problem is that the latter is on strike at the moment. There are buses; there are boats. But nonetheless, the vast majority of people who live on the island and want to get off it are today trying to use the Jubilee line.
To make things even more fun, there’s quite a lot of construction work going on at the moment, making parts of the area more difficult than normal to negotiate on foot.
So almost everyone who’s trying to get from the Isle of Dogs to Canary Wharf station is using this bridge here:
