It can feel like we’ve been waiting for Crossrail forever. So far, it’s all been a lot of dust, construction and disruption, and not a lot of “zooming through the city’s centre in ease and comfort”.
So to keep our appetites whetted, the Crossrail Project has created a video showing a construction locomotive moving through a freshly dug tunnel Stepney Green (which won’t actually be a Crossrail station) and Farringdon.
This alone wouldn’t be particularly interesting, but the final video actually lets you navigate, Google Street View style, in 360 degrees. This means that as the locomotive chugs along, you can look at the tunnel from every angle, plus crane down other tunnels at intersections and even peer at the construction train itself. We have to admit this is pretty cool.
Here’s the video – you use the toggle in the top left hand corner to view the tunnel from different angles:
The service’s launch is still a long way off – if everything goes ahead on schedule, the first trains on the central section will run in late 2018. Til then, we can play with the video.
